A team of 10 engineering experts, through laboratory studies conducted at Sakarya University, developed a product that can instantly extinguish lithium battery fires occurring in electric vehicles. The team leader, industrial engineer Ferhat Bozkurt, stated that it is difficult to extinguish such fires with existing methods.

Bozkurt emphasized that approximately 80 tons of water are usually consumed to extinguish electric vehicle fires and expressed that an important feature of the fire extinguishing agent they developed is its ability to rapidly reduce flaming lithium batteries from 1000 degrees to below 50 degrees. He noted that this feature is rare worldwide.

Testing and Development Phase

The product’s tests are being conducted in cooperation with the fire departments of Istanbul and Ankara. After successful results, field trials are planned with some fire departments in Europe, America, and China.

University-Industry Collaboration

This project, carried out with the support of Sakarya University, stands out as an important example of university-industry cooperation. Academics have actively participated in this process. Production takes place in Konya, while testing and development activities are also carried out with other universities.

Future Plans

The newly developed solution not only intervenes in fires but also has the potential to prevent them. Some electric vehicle manufacturers have started R&D studies to completely eliminate fire risk by coating batteries with this chemical. Bozkurt announced that the product will soon be available in all companies selling firefighting equipment.
